Gotta get the Slow Ones

Photographing cyclists who are on foot is my favourite because I don't have an autofocus lens. This lack of modern equipment reduces my chances of catching anyone going faster than 3km/h. If I do happen to get a great action shot, I don't even understand how it happened.

Location: Gastown, Vancouver

  1. I feel like you gotta get closer to the subjects in the photo. I can't see how chic they are....

  2. Sometimes their surroundings play a big role in their chicness, but you're right. I do need to get closer.

  3. I've found that without high quality gear, it's challenging to get good close shots of cyclists (even walking ones) without wandering up and introducing yourself.

What sort of camera do you use?

  4. You're right and I do, in fact, walk up to people and get portraits quite often (as you've seen).

I use a GF-1 DSLR and it's actually quite awesome. I have an old Tokina MF with a fixed focal length of 56mm so I can't zoom; I actually have to think ahead about where to situate myself or--on the fly--just cross my fingers and shoot. I will invest in a zoom lens with AF one day. For now, I am quite pleased with the results of my moldy old glass.

    You?

  5. I use a Canon G10. A bit limited for (moving) cycle photography but easy to toss in a purse.

They do say that constraints breed creativity...
